Splash of colour for Scouts Building

May 26, 2017

A collaboration between the Town of Victoria Park, the Lathlain Scouts and Girl Guides and local artist Daek Williams has resulted in a vibrant and eye-catching new mural being painted on the front of the Scouts Building in Lathlain.

The colourful mural features young scouts and guides playing in a fanciful treehouse and will soon be finished with the printing of the Lathlain Scouts and Girl Guides logos inside the clouds above the door.

Daek Williams prepared three concepts for review based on the Town’s brief for the mural to be colourful and community friendly.

“The whimsical treehouse is symbolic, it’s about letting kids be kids, allowing them to have fun,” Mr Williams said.

“Life is an adventure and imagination is the key to being a kid and doing great things,” he said.

Town of Victoria Park Deputy Mayor, Brian Oliver, said the mural was fun and certainly captured attention when walking past the building.

“Daek Williams is very talented and his work has certainly transformed the Scouts building,” said Deputy Mayor Oliver.

“The concept clearly aligns with the Scouts and Girl Guide principles of providing a wide range of constructive and challenging activities including opportunities for adventure and exploration both indoors and outdoors.”

The mural is part of the revitalisation of the Scouts Building and grounds, which form Zone 8 in the Town’s $70 million Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project.

Other improvements in Zone 8 include a new fence around the perimeter, solid front doors installed, improved entry canopy, new front lawn, new plants and wood features, and brick paving around the grounds.

The Lathlain Precinct Redevelopment Project is a revitalisation of one of Perth’s oldest suburbs – Lathlain. It is the most significant project the Town of Victoria Park has ever embarked on and with partners West Coast Eagles and Perth Football Club, it will result in substantial social and economic benefits for the people of Lathlain, and the broader community.
